TWO IMPROVISATION MACHINES

MIYAMELO is a Zürich–Tokyo electroacoustic double duo comprised of two augmented flutes and two self-built improvisation machines.

Central to MIYAMELO is the improvisation machine: not an effect, but an independent musical entity with its own agency, built from software and hardware that creates dialog with performer behavior through sensors, algorithms, and the flow of the performer’s breath. Each machine creates a mirror—reflecting its human creator's tendencies while pushing them to play outside of their comfort zones. When two such mirror systems come together across different universes, the interactions exponentially create new forms of music-making.

MELO | ZÜRICH

With decades of training in classical music and specializations in contemporary music performance with Matthias Ziegler, Shanna Pranaitis, and Dr. Jonathan Keeble, Melo has focused over the last 10 years on her unique performance practice with her self-developed sensor-augmented flute + improvisation machine (AIYA). Based in Zürich, Melo collaborates regularly across Europe, the United States, and more recently, in Japan. She is a research associate in 3D audio at the Immersive Arts Space Zürich and doctoral candidate at the Künstuniversität Graz + Zürich University of the Arts. As a new media and sound artist, she creates immersive multimedia installations, transporting audiences into intimate worlds.

MIYA | TOKYO

A prominent figure in the Japanese jazz music scene for over 20 years, collaborating internationally and having worked with jazz and contemporary musicians such as Terry Day and Benedict Taylor, Miya performs on a unique “Modular Flute” setup combining sensors and modular synthesizer with the flute. With sensitivities ranging from electronic noise-music soundscapes to performing in natural landscapes with the traditional Japanese Noh and Ryuteki (”dragon”) flutes, Miya’s capacity to connect different genres and music scenes is unprecedented. She has released numerous albums over the last two decades, spanning jazz, conduction/structured improvisation, and flute + modular synthesizer.
